The Joffrey NY Ballet Intensive is Joffrey Ballet School’s flagship ballet intensive in New York City, led by Artistic Directors Era Jouravlev and Jennifer Howard and Associate Artistic Director Stacy Caddell. Rooted in the classical foundation on which Joffrey Ballet School was built, the program combines rigorous technical training with a broad approach to movement, artistry, and performance, developing dancers into expressive, versatile, and professionally prepared artists.
A Ballet audition is required for admission to this intensive. Students may audition in person or digitally. Students must be 8 years of age by June 7, 2027 in order to audition and be considered for this program.
Students do not need to attend a separate audition for every Summer Intensive they are interested in. By completing a Ballet audition, dancers are automatically considered for all Summer Intensives within the Ballet audition style for which they meet the stated age requirements.
Students train in a full-day intensive environment designed to build technique, artistry, versatility, and professional training habits. A typical day begins with classes in the morning, followed by an approximately 30–45 minute lunch break, with short 5–15 minute breaks between classes. Training then continues through the late afternoon or early evening with additional classes, specialty training, and/or rehearsals.
The curriculum may include Ballet Technique, Pre-Pointe/Pointe/Allegro, Pas de Deux, Ballet Variations, Contemporary Ballet, Contemporary Dance, Body Conditioning, Jazz, Ballet Repertoire, World Dance, and Modern Dance. Please note that certain classes may be offered only to select levels based on age, placement, and experience.
Registration is structured by week, giving students flexibility to build an intensive experience that fits their summer schedule. Students may register for any number of available weeks, and selected weeks do not need to be consecutive.
Students interested in participating in the Performance Track should note the additional attendance requirement outlined under Performance Opportunities.
Students may participate in either the Non-Performance Track or Performance Track. Performance Track dancers take part in a three-week rehearsal process culminating in a fully produced theater performance in New York City featuring classical and contemporary works.
To participate in the Performance Track, dancers must attend the final three weeks of the intensive. The program presents two performances on the same day, and all Performance Track dancers perform in both shows. Both performances feature the same program and repertoire.
Dancers are assigned to training groups based on their audition and age. Instructors or Artistic Directors may additionally evaluate student placement to ensure proper placement. Dancers may not request a change in training groups.
Studio assignments are determined by program scheduling, group placement, and enrollment. Requests for a particular studio location cannot be accommodated.
For students registered for housing, residence hall assignments are made based on several factors, which may include age, gender, program selection, dates of attendance, and available space. Requests for specific dorm building assignments cannot be guaranteed.

The sample menu in the manual displays examples of food items that you can expect to be served for the studio lunch plan. Students are able to note dietary restrictions when registering for the summer and meals will be adjusted accordingly. We do not recommend the studio lunch plan for students who have severe dietary restrictions or very specific food preferences. If the vendor is not able to accommodate a specific request in advance of you joining the program, Joffrey will let you know and you will have the option to cancel your studio lunch plan and receive a refund. This does not include students who update their preferences after they have arrived. Students will not be able to cancel the studio lunch plan after they have arrived and started the program.

If you are looking for alternate lodging, we recommend searching for hotels in the Midtown area in Manhattan, extending from 34th Street to 59th Street and from 3rd Avenue to 8th Avenue. Additionally we recommend finding housing close to a subway station, especially the B, D, F, or M (Orange) subway lines. The Midtown area is a great location to have easy access to all three studio locations, the theater and NYC activities.
Midtown Manhattan is home to iconic attractions like Times Square, Broadway and the Museum of Modern Art, and architectural landmarks including the Chrysler Building, Grand Central Terminal, the Flatiron Building, and the Empire State Building.
Due to the competitive nature of hotels in NYC, Joffrey is not able to recommend specific hotels. Students and parents are welcome to reach out to Customer Support to confirm if a hotel is in the Midtown area and close to a subway station.

CLICK HERE to request Airport Transportation
Joffrey Ballet School offers airport transportation for the NYC intensives. For this service, a driver is arranged to transport the student to/from the airport and the residence hall. Airport transportation requests must be submitted at least two weeks before the departure/arrival time. There is an additional fee for this service.
*JBS is only able to arrange a JBS staff member to accompany the student, for those who are traveling as an unaccompanied minor.
Students are welcome to request to travel with another student in the same car. Students who arrive with family members are also welcome to request transportation together. It is very important to note the names of all patrons during the initial request. It would also be beneficial to send an email to transportation@joffreyballetschool.com after completing the request, to confirm the information.
Please see the housing manual for more information on airport transportation services.
The Residence Life Department team consists of a Residence Hall Coordinator and a group of live-in Resident Advisors (RAs) who rotate duty shifts. The RA on duty can be reached 24/7. The team facilitates daily operations and handles crises or emergencies should they arise. RAs are also available to take students (17 and younger) to the doctor, conduct weekly apartment inspections and daily rounds to ensure health and safety. Our team meets with students to conduct wellness checks, mediations, conflict resolution meetings, friendship introductions and any other situation that students need assistance with.
All of our summer interns take part in a robust selection process that includes a formal application, one-on-one interviews, group evaluations and background checks. Most of our interns are currently attending university or have graduated. All candidates must have a dance background or share an appreciation for performing arts.

STUDENTS: Students DO NOT need to purchase tickets for the Musical Theater Intensive Activities.

Musicals are not assigned until the week before the students arrive. Guests will only be able to purchase tickets after musicals are assigned.
Only students who are registered for the Musical Theater Intensive are allowed to attend.
Family and friends of Musical Theater students are allowed to purchase tickets to the show that their student is attending.
All activities are chaperoned by staff.
Staff will escort Housing students from the dorm/studio to the activity, attend the activity with them and escort them back to the dorm. In the event that a Housing student will not have enough time to travel back to the dorm after class, they will need to pack for the day accordingly. Housing students (on the meal plan) departing from the studio must pick up their pre-prepared dinner during breakfast. Students who do not pick up a meal at breakfast will not have a meal saved for them.
Departure from the dorm/studio: Students must arrive at the departure location at the assigned time. Please note that for some activities, you will only have a few minutes between class and the departure time to eat and get dressed.
Arrival at the venue: Commuter students who did not travel with the group, must meet at the designated spot by the assigned time.
During the activity: All students should listen to staff and should be exhibiting proper etiquette. Students are not allowed to be on their phone or talk during a performance, climb over seats, etc. A staff member will address them if they do not behave accordingly. Please do not disrespect the staff members.
After the activity: ALL STUDENTS (Housing and Commuter) must meet at the designated spot where attendance will be taken. Commuter students are not allowed to leave until they are dismissed and accounted for. Housing students must travel back to the dorm with the group.
Tickets will be distributed at the venue before the event.
If a Commuter student is not present after distribution of tickets is complete for a show, their name will be written on the back of the ticket and left at the box office. Please note that some shows do not allow late seating and that patrons who arrive late to an activity other than a show will not be able to attend the activity.
JBS does not officially honor seating requests. Traditionally the group tickets are reserved together. Some seats might not be located in the same row or section as the rest of the group. Although seating requests are not guaranteed, we will try our best to honor them. Tickets left at the box office for late comers might not be located together or with the rest of the group.
Tickets will only be distributed to dancers and guardians listed on the roster (as provided by the students/guardians when they purchased tickets).
