- Audition:Audition Required
- Type of Audition Style: Tap
The Joffrey NY Tap Summer Intensive, led by Artistic Directors Ryan Lohoff and Angela Carter, offers serious tap dancers a focused training experience that connects the history of tap with its contemporary and emerging forms. Through technical study, repertory, improvisation, composition, and musical exploration, students deepen their understanding of the art form while developing the precision, individuality, and performance quality required of today’s tap dancer.
A Tap audition is required for admission to this intensive. Students may audition in person or digitally.
Students do not need to attend a separate audition for every Summer Intensive they are interested in. By completing a Tap audition, dancers are automatically considered for all Summer Intensives within the Tap audition style for which they meet the stated age requirements.
Students train in a full-day intensive environment designed to build technique, artistry, versatility, and professional training habits. A typical day begins with classes in the morning, followed by an approximately 30–45 minute lunch break, with short 5–15 minute breaks between classes. Training then continues through the late afternoon or early evening with additional classes, specialty training, and/or rehearsals.
The curriculum may include Tap Technique, Tap History, Tap Repertoire, Tap Improvisation, Tap Composition, and Musicality. Please note that certain classes may be offered only to select levels based on age, placement, and experience. Registered students will receive an exact schedule the week before the intensive start date.
Registration is structured by week, giving students flexibility to build an intensive experience that fits their summer schedule. Students may register for any number of available weeks, and selected weeks do not need to be consecutive.
Students participate in an informal showing at the end of each week, giving family and friends the opportunity to experience the dancers’ progress and the work developed throughout the intensive.
Dancers are assigned to training groups based on their audition and age and may be additionally evaluated during the first day of classes.
Studio assignments are determined by program scheduling, group placement, and enrollment. Requests for a particular studio location cannot be accommodated.
For students registered for housing, residence hall assignments are made based on several factors, which may include age, sex, gender identification, program selection, dates of attendance, and available space. Requests for specific dorm building assignments cannot be guaranteed.

A completed physical or physician’s note from within the last 12 months is required and should be completed before a dancer begins their selected intensive. If you have a completed physical examination for your dancer from within the last calendar year, you can substitute it in place of the Doctor’s note. The letter must state that the dancer is healthy and physically able to participate in the summer program. This form will be submitted at the student’s program orientation. A complete physical is not necessary. Sample Doctor’s Note
- Students 13 and younger are not allowed to leave a Joffrey Ballet School building without a staff member.

The sample menu in the manual displays examples of food items that you can expect to be served for the studio lunch plan. Students are able to note dietary restrictions when registering for the summer and meals will be adjusted accordingly. We do not recommend the studio lunch plan for students who have severe dietary restrictions or very specific food preferences. HOUSING STUDENTS
- Dancers staying in Joffrey housing have access to staff to guide them to/from classes each day from our housing locations.
- Students will travel using the subway/public transportation.
COMMUTER STUDENTS:
- We recommend Midtown if you are looking for alternate lodging as all studios are easily accessible from that area.
- Commuter students are unfortunately not able to join the escorted groups to/and from the dorms.
- If a dancer is assigned to Pearl Studios, you will need access to the A, C, or E (Blue) subway lines. Nearest stop: 34 St/Penn Station.
Start Time: 9:00 am – 9:45 am
Ending Time: 5:00 pm – 5:30 pm
Classes are held Monday – Friday only.
Schedules for our intensives are made available the week prior to the program start date. Schedules are posted on the Joffrey website. Schedules can be viewed online, and will also be posted on the Band group.
If you are looking for alternate lodging, we recommend searching for hotels in the Midtown area in Manhattan, extending from 34th Street to 59th Street and from 3rd Avenue to 8th Avenue. Additionally we recommend finding housing close to a subway station, especially the B, D, F, or M (Orange) subway lines. The Midtown area is a great location to have easy access to all three studio locations, the theater and NYC activities.
Midtown Manhattan is home to iconic attractions like Times Square, Broadway and the Museum of Modern Art, and architectural landmarks including the Chrysler Building, Grand Central Terminal, the Flatiron Building, and the Empire State Building.
Due to the competitive nature of hotels in NYC, Joffrey is not able to recommend specific hotels. Students and parents are welcome to reach out to Customer Support to confirm if a hotel is in the Midtown area and close to a subway station.

If a Commuter student is not present after distribution of tickets is complete for a show, their name will be written on the back of the ticket and left at the box office. Please note that some shows do not allow late seating and that patrons who arrive late to an activity other than a show will not be able to attend the activity.
JBS does not officially honor seating requests. Traditionally the group tickets are reserved together. Some seats might not be located in the same row or section as the rest of the group. Although seating requests are not guaranteed, we will try our best to honor them. Tickets left at the box office for late comers might not be located together or with the rest of the group.
Tickets will only be distributed to dancers and guardians listed on the roster (as provided by the students/guardians when they purchased tickets).
