The Joffrey South Jazz & Contemporary Summer Intensive, led by Artistic Director Colleen Barnes and Associate Artistic Director Lindsay Giedl, offers dancers an intimate, supportive, and rigorous multi-genre training experience designed to strengthen technique, versatility, artistry, and confidence. Through focused training across jazz, contemporary, hip hop, ballet, and complementary movement practices, students are challenged to expand their range while developing the adaptability and professional habits required of today’s dancers.

A Jazz & Contemporary audition is required for admission to this intensive. Students may audition in person or digitally. Students must be 8 years of age by June 7, 2027 in order to audition and be accepted for this program. Students can not be over the age of 18.
Students do not need to attend a separate audition for every Summer Intensive they are interested in. By completing a Jazz & Contemporary audition, dancers are automatically considered for all Summer Intensives within the Jazz & Contemporary audition style for which they meet the stated age requirements.

Students train in a full-day intensive environment designed to build technique, artistry, versatility, and professional training habits. A typical day begins with classes in the morning, followed by an approximately 30–45 minute lunch break, with short 5–15 minute breaks between classes. Training then continues through the late afternoon or early evening with additional classes, specialty training, and/or rehearsals. Students attending the final week of the program will focus on the rehearsal and performance process and should expect to have 1 to 2 technique classes a day followed by rehearsals.
The curriculum may include Ballet Technique, Conditioning for Dance and Injury Prevention, Contemporary, Jazz, Hip Hop, Improvisation, Yoga/Conditioning, Jazz Funk, and Jazz Heels. Please note that certain classes may be offered only to select levels based on age, placement, and experience. Registered students will receive an exact schedule the week before the intensive start date.

Dancers are assigned to training groups based on their audition and age and may be additionally evaluated during the first day of classes.
Studio assignments are determined by program scheduling, group placement, and enrollment. Requests for a particular studio location cannot be accommodated.
For students registered for housing, residence hall assignments are made based on several factors, which may include age, gender, program selection, dates of attendance, and available space. Requests for specific dorm building assignments cannot be guaranteed.
