The Joffrey Miami Jazz & Contemporary Summer Intensive, led by Artistic Directors Diego Salterini and Hannah Baumgarten, offers a dynamic multi-genre training experience focused in Modern, Jazz, and Contemporary, alongside African and Caribbean dance forms. Rooted in the Joffrey Ballet School training tradition and inspired by the rich cultural landscape of Miami this program explores the crossroads of dance through 2 unique weeks highlighting the African & Caribbean roots of dance. This intensive is rigorous, physically demanding, and deeply connected to the histories and cultures that shaped the way we dance today.

A Jazz & Contemporary audition is required for admission to this intensive. Students may audition in person or digitally. Dancers must be 10 years old by June 7th in order to audition and be accepted for this program. This program accepts dancers between the ages of 10 – 18.
Students do not need to attend a separate audition for every Summer Intensive they are interested in. By completing a Jazz & Contemporary audition, dancers are automatically considered for all Summer Intensives within that audition style for which they meet the stated age requirements.

Students train in a full-day intensive environment designed to build technique, artistry, versatility, and professional training habits. A typical day begins with classes in the morning, followed by a 30–45 minute lunch break, with short 5–15 minute breaks between classes. Training then continues through the late afternoon or early evening with additional classes, specialty training, and/or rehearsals.

Each week offers a complete intensive experience, built around the same core training while exploring a distinct cultural and stylistic pathway. Through class, repertory, rhythm, and cultural exploration, dancers experience the evolution of movement from its roots in African and Caribbean dance traditions through Modern, Jazz, Contemporary, Hip Hop, Musical Theater, and Latin dance forms.

WEEK ONE — AFRICAN ROOTS
Trace the movement from West African Dance through Modern and Contemporary technique to Hip Hop, exploring the rhythms, physicality, and cultural influences that connect these forms.

WEEK TWO — CARIBBEAN ROOTS
Explore the connections between Afro-Cuban Dance, Contemporary, Jazz,Contemporary Ballet, and Latin Jazz, discovering how rhythm, musicality, and cultural exchange continue to shape contemporary dance.

The curriculum may include Jazz, Modern Dance, Contemporary Dance, Jazz, Contemporary Ballet, West African Dance, Afro-Cuban Dance, Latin Jazz, and Hip Hop. Please note that certain classes may be offered only to select levels based on age, placement, and experience. Registered students will receive an exact schedule the week before the intensive start date.

Dancers are assigned to training groups based on their audition and age and may be additionally evaluated during the first day of classes.
Studio assignments are determined by program scheduling, group placement, and enrollment. Requests for a particular studio location cannot be accommodated.
For students registered for housing, residence hall assignments are made based on several factors, which may include age, gender, program selection, dates of attendance, and available space. Requests for specific dorm building assignments cannot be guaranteed.
