Concert Group
Founded by Robert Joffrey in 1981, this pre-professional performing ensemble provides young artists from the School’s year-round Trainee Program the opportunity to experience life as a professional dancer.
In the years since its inception, selected Trainees studied and performed some of the most celebrated classical and contemporary repertoire. This included the works of Gerald Arpino (Birthday Variations, Light Rain), Robert Battle (Battlefield), George Balanchine (Serenade), August Bournonville (La Ventana), Dwight Rohden (New Work) and Africa Guzman (The Stolen Path).
The Concert Group has toured domestically and internationally, providing dancers the experience necessary to confidently transition from student to professional.
Newly appointed Artistic Director, Bradley Shelver, will seek to build on the high standard set by Robertson, with the reboot of the ensemble in September 2022, preparing the next generation of artists for the stage.
Concert Group dancers have gone on to perform in premiere companies including Miami City Ballet, Boston Ballet, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, the Forsythe Company, the Martha Graham Dance Company, Dance Theatre of Harlem, and the Joffrey Ballet.
Choreographic Initiative
The Joffrey Concert Group under the Artistic Direction of Bradley Shelver, is announcing the 2nd Annual, JBCG Creative Movers Initiative, a search for the dance makers of the future. This program will provide 2 dance makers the opportunity to have creative time and studio space to produce a new contemporary, and contemporary ballet work for the Joffrey Concert Group. Please note housing and airfare will not be provided. Please only apply if you are able to be in NYC for the entire duration of your creative process.
The JCG is a 20 member, pre-professional company housed at the Joffrey Ballet School. Choreographers between the ages of 19-30, in both contemporary modern and contemporary ballet styles are encouraged to apply and will be provided with a $2500 stipend for the 30 hour rehearsal process. The works will be fully produced in a theater setting giving the opportunity for cutting edge dance makers to develop their skills and creative voices. Works will be between 12-17 minutes in length and should include the full company.
Please include your resume, a brief description of your creative process, your chosen style and dance vocabulary inspiration and a short explanation of the concept for the work.
