OVERVIEW & PERFORMANCE
Download Student Handbook Here - COMING SOON

The Summer Intensive exposes students to a rigorous and exciting ballet program. The School invites master teachers to join our renowned faculty who give instruction in a professional setting while challenging each student to reach the peak of their potential.

While attending the Summer Intensive program in New York, students will also be exposed to New York’s unparalleled dance community. Not only will students receive world class training, they will also have the opportunity to see performances by New York’s resident companies, such as American Ballet Theater and New York City Ballet, along with other major American and international dance companies.

The Summer Intensive is a one to seven week summer intensive course which culminates in a student performance at a local theater on the last day of the program. The intensive is intended to provide as much flexibility for a student’s summer schedule as possible. Instruction during both periods is designed to flow seamlessly between the two. Students are encouraged to attend as many weeks as possible to obtain the greatest benefit from the program.

INTENSIVE TRACK (NOT IN THE PERFORMANCE; BEGINNER, INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED LEVELS)

The first four weeks of the program is a period of intensive study with a recommended attendance of at least two weeks with one week options available for additional flexibility.

During the intensive period, students take four classes a day. Ballet technique or men’s class and pointe or pas de deux are required as two of the four classes. Additional classes are offered in variations, modern, jazz, partnering, improvisation, contemporary ballet, yoga, Pilates, dance history, and health and wellness lectures. Actual class schedules are determined by each student’s level of ability. Performance Track students are encouraged to attend during this period to obtain the most benefit from the program. Students may sign up for activities such as attending performances of ABT, NYC Ballet, Broadway Musicals, trips to the Statue of Liberty, etc. The activities will be posted online shortly.

NOTE* The last four weeks of the program is a period of study with a required four week attendance. You must attend all four of those weeks to register for that session.

PERFORMANCE TRACK (PERFORMING; INTERMEDIATE, ADVANCED AND ELITE LEVELS)

The last four weeks is a period of intense study that culminates in a performance at the end of the program. Performance period students will receive three to four classes per day, consisting of the same classes as the intensive period students, as well as rehearsals. All students in the performance period must attend the program for at least the last four weeks of the program but may attend any of the seven-week period.

Your acceptance to the Performance Track makes you eligible to attend from any one to all four weeks of the first four weeks, but students who wish to participate in the Performance Track must attend the entire last four week period, and are encouraged to attend at least one week of the first four weeks.  The first four weeks of the program is a period of rigorous study with a recommended attendance of at least two weeks with one week options available for additional flexibility. The last four weeks of the program is a period of performance preparation with a required four week attendance. You must attend all four of those weeks to register for the Performance Track.

During the first four week period, students take at least four classes per day. Ballet technique or men’s class and pointe or pas de deux are included as two of the four daily classes.  Additional classes will vary by day and level, and may include variations, modern, jazz, partnering, improvisation, contemporary ballet, yoga, Pilates, dance history, and health and wellness lectures. Actual class schedules are determined by each student’s level of ability. You are encouraged to attend during this period in order to obtain the maximum benefit from the program.

The last four week period (July 2nd through July 27th) culminates in performances on July 27th and 28th.  During this time, you will take three to four classes per day, consisting of the same classes as the first four weeks, plus rehearsals. All students in the Performance Track may attend any of the first four weeks of the seven-week Summer Program but MUST attend at least the last four weeks of the program.  If you do not wish to perform, you should register for the Intensive Track, not the Performance Track.

In addition to your classes, Joffrey Ballet School considers the opportunity to experience all of the wonderful “sights-and-sounds” of New York City a part of your program.  You will be able to register for extra-curricular activities such as attending performances of American Ballet Theatre (ABT), New York City Ballet (NYCB), and Broadway musicals, as well as go on trips to the Statue of Liberty, Bronx Zoo, and more. The activities will be posted online and emailed to you shortly.  Instructions for registering will be included at that time

*NEW PROGRAM ADDITION* If you do not wish to perform, you may attend the last four weeks of the intensive period but it is also required to stay for all four weeks. You will take four classes a day.

ELITE LEVEL

The Joffrey Ballet School Summer Intensive NYC announces a new Elite level designed specifically for advanced students whose talent and potential make them candidates for the professional dance world. Students chosen for the Elite level will automatically receive scholarships for the summer, immediate acceptance into our year-round trainee program, and will be considered for the Joffrey School Performance Company, where they will have many performing opportunities in NYC and on tour.

The JBS provides intensive training in both classical and contemporary ballet repertory. Company members will have the opportunity to be coached in the classical ballets, as well as learning works from the Joffrey/Arpino repertory. In addition, they will be immersed in the creative process, working on new commissions with talented emerging choreographers. Recent additions to the repertory include works by Daniel Ulbricht (principal, NYCB), Africa Guzman (principal, Compania Nacional de Danza), Julie Bour (formerly with Ballet Prejlocaj), JSPC Artistic Director Davis Robertson, and Associate Director Brian McSween (both formerly with the Joffrey Ballet).
