Financial aid is available to all students who commit to taking a minimum of 15 classes per week. Any student who wishes to be considered for Financial Aid, including merit scholarships, must complete the Free Application For Student Aid (FAFSA) each year that he or she is enrolled in the program. There are no exceptions. The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov or from the Joffrey Ballet School’s administrative office.
Federal Pell Grant: The Federal Pell Grant is offered by the federal government to qualifying students regardless of the school they choose to attend. To qualify for this grant, the student must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident enrolled in an eligible program who has not already earned a first bachelors degree. Recipients may not owe a refund of any federally-funded student aid or be in default on any federally-funded student loan. If the student is eligible for a Federal Pell Grant, the school notifies him or her of the amount to be awarded. Grants of up to $4310.00 per year are made to eligible students as determined by the student’s financial need and enrollment status. Students may continue to receive Federal Pell Grants for the duration of time required to complete their first undergraduate course of study. Federal Pell Grants are not available to students currently enrolled in High School.
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG): FSEOG are jointly funded by the Federal Government and the School. To qualify for this grant, the student must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident enrolled in an eligible program who has not already earned a first bachelors degree. Recipients may not owe a refund of any federally-funded student aid or be in default on any federally-funded student loan. Dependant upon funds available, grants of a minimum of $100.00 to a maximum of $4,000.00 are made to students demonstrating exceptional financial need. First priority for FSEOG grants is given to Pell Grant recipients. The financial aid administrator determines the amount of individual FSEOG by deducting Federal Pell Grants from the financial need of eligible students and the ranking the students according to financial need remaining. FSEOG are then awarded to the neediest students. The School Director is consulted to determine any additional factors affecting student need. The size of each award is determined by the amount of FSEOG available as compared to need demonstrated. Students may receive FSEOG for the duration of time required to complete their first undergraduate study.
Federal Workstudy: Students may be awarded Federal Work-study money. If awarded the student is given the option to accept or deny work-study funds. If the student accepts the funds he/she is required to work at the school either assisting classes, helping in the office or whatever is required by the office staff. Students will not receive the work-study funds until they have turned in a timecard detailing the hours they have worked.
Merit Scholarships: The Joffrey Ballet School offers full and partial scholarships to participants in the Trainee Program on the basis of merit. These scholarships may be for the summer program, or one semester, or for the full academic year. Students are recommended for scholarships by the Faculty after observation in class or audition. Since scholarships are in the form of tuition waivers representing a loss of income to the School, they are limited in number and amount. Progress of scholarships recipients is evaluated by the Faculty at the end of each semester and recommendations are made to continue or discontinue assistance at that time. Scholarship recipients are required to file the FAFSA. The amount of each tuition waiver is partially determined by the information provided on the FAFSA.
Joffrey Financial Assistance Scholarship: Joffrey may award financial assistance scholarships to student’s who demonstrate great financial need. They are awarded based on the student’s financial situation and also on the discretion of Joffrey administration. Joffrey requires all students who are applying for this type of aid to provide financial documents, which include their most recent tax returns and bank statments for the past 3 months.
Veteran Benefits: The Joffrey Ballet School is approved by the Veterans Administration for the training of veterans and other students receiving benefits.
Students apply for all types of Financial Aid, including merit scholarship, by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The easiest way to submit a FAFSA is to do it online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. You can also submit a paper copy if you do not have access to a computer. Call the administrative office to receive a paper copy, which would then be submitted to the address on the form. When filling out the FAFSA use school code 015466. This form is used to determine both eligibility for Federal Pell, FSEOG and work-study awards, and the amount of tuition waivers for students selected for merit and financial assistance scholarships. If the student filed electronically they should receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) within one to two weeks after they have filed their form. This report will show the Expected Family Contribution which will be used to determine the student’s financial need. The deadline for completing the application for federal grants is June 30th of each year. For example, a student enrolled during the 2007-2008 school year must have their application filed by June 30th, 2008 in order for them to receive aid. It is recommended, though, that students file their FAFSA prior to the start of the school year as some forms of aid are divided out at the beginning of the school year and this would ensure if the student was financially needy that they receive the most aid possible. Please refer to the Federal Financial Aid Timeline for more detailed deadlines. Financial Aid TimelineStudents who turn their FAFSA in prior to July 1st, 2007 will be mailed their award package on July 16th, 2007. Those student who do not have their FAFSA turned in at this time must have submitted it by August 22nd, 2007 to guarantee that they will receive their award package prior to the start of the school year on September 4th, 2007. Students who haven't submitted their FAFSA before September 4th, 2007 will receive their award package withing 1-2 weeks of submission of the FAFSA.
Some applications for Financial Aid are selected for a process called verification. If the applicant is selected, an asterisk appears on the top of the SARS, next to the letters EFC (expected family contribution). If an application must be verified, the applicant and his or her parents (if dependant) must provide documents which confirm the figures used on the application. The Financial Aid Administrator notifies the applicant of the documents required, and deadlines for their receipt. No Financial Aid disbursements are made until selected applicants have completed verification.
All students who qualify for the Federal Pell Grant and who maintain a satisfactory progress in the program are entitled to the full amount of their grant as determined by their need, amount of time enrolled, and the enrollment status. Students maintaining satisfactory progress are entitled to the FSEOG awarded. While eligibility for scholarships is determined by merit only, the amount of scholarship tuition waivers is partially determined by the recipient’s financial need and other sources of aid available. Scholarship amounts are established by the Director after consultation with the Financial Aid Administrator. Each aid applicant receives an award letter detailing the amount and type of Financial Aid he or she will receive. The total of federally funded aid plus scholarship aid may not exceed the student’s demonstrated financial need.
All recipients of Financial Aid must maintain satisfactory progress in order to continue to receive such aid.
Federal Pell Grants and FSEOG are disbursed in the form of tuition credit in two equal amounts as the student completes each half of the required 900 hours of study per year. Amounts in excess of tuition due are disbursed directly to the student in equal amounts on the same disbursement dates. Scholarship funds are disbursed in the form of tuition wavers at the beginning of each semester.

Repayment : Should you receive a cash disbursement(s) of financial aid for living expenses, and later terminate your enrollment (i.e., drop out, withdraw or are expelled), you must repay any amount you have received in excess of your non-tuition expenses. To determine the amount of expenses you could have reasonably incurred during your enrollment, the following formula is used:
Expenses to Date = (Cost of Attendance – Tuition / 12 Months) X Number of Months Enrolled
Once your expenses to date are determined, the following formula is used to determine the amount of over payment you may have received:
Overpayment = Aid advance to student - expenses to date
The following formula is used to determine how much of this required repayment will be returned to Title IV Programs:
Total Amount of Title IV for the payment period / Total Amount of Assistance awarded for payment period
In the following order:
Federal Pell Grant Program (PELL) up to the amount received less amount applied to tuition. Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) up to the amount awarded less amount applied to tuition. Should you owe a repayment to any federally-sponsored student aid program you cannot receive any type of federally-sponsored student aid disbursement for any future enrollment periods, at any school, unless repayment has been made witht eh administrative office at the Joffrey Ballet School.
