2008 Housing Print E-mail
After a successful pilot program in 2007, the School has leased a 111 bed dormitory facility near the School. The dormitory is owned by the American Music and Drama Academy, but not in use by them during the summer. The dormitory is staffed by Joffrey chaperones and intended to house both students and parents.

The dormitory is available to students ages 12 and up. If you are accepted it is important to return the Dormitory Application as soon as possible because there are less beds than spaces in the program. The cost of housing depends on the number of weeks you attend. Follow the instructions on the application to determine your total housing fees. There is an optional airport pickup and drop off service you may sign up for on the application. A non-refundable deposit of $100, which will be applied to your housing fee, must accompany the application. If the dormitory is full you will be placed on a waitlist and provided with a list of alternative housing options.

The dormitory is located on the Upper West Side 15-20 minutes by subway from the School. Resident Assistants (RA) will accompany students on the subway to and from the school at designated times. (If you are a mother who will be staying at the dormitory as a chaperone and would like to assist our professional staff as an RA in exchange for free accommodation please contact Lee at ext 23 for further information). The dormitory has 24 hour security access limited to students, immediate family members, and summer personnel. The facilities include the equivalent of 2 full size kitchens, 6 microwaves, 10 computers with Internet access, laundry, and lounge with TV. Each room has an air conditioner, refrigerator, two closets, and a dresser. The dormitory is surrounded by all sorts of restaurants and groceries serving every budget and lifestyle (at the moment we do not provide meals at the dormitory). We will have 1 RA for every 20 students under the age of 18 and 1 Head Resident in charge of all Joffrey students who will live at the residence. For students ages 12 and 13 we will have 1 chaperone for every 6 students – for a total of 18 spots in that age group. These chaperons will provide much tighter supervision of this age group than the older students. If you are interested in serving as one of these chaperons you will receive 50% off housing fees. We are considering charging a small fee for chaperons of 12 and 13 year olds to cook or provide meals for student's they are responsible for.  We welcome any inquiries regarding this matter and will be actively looking for at least one chaperon who is willing to cook for this age group.  Students will be placed in the dorm by age. There are single, double and triple rooms.

You are required to stay at the dormitory unless it is full. However you may apply for an exemption from this requirement by completing the Housing Waiver Form for the following reasons: 1. You will be staying with a local relative or chaperone 2. Extenuating circumstances 3. You are 12 or 13 and we have run out of spots for you. We will provide an alternative housing list to those who have been granted a waiver. This list may also be downloaded from the housing page on our website.

Once the dormitory is full we have an extensive list of alternative summer housing facilities for students in Manhattan as well as a housing networking list for parents and students. WE ARE REVISING LIST AND WILL RE-POST TO SITE BY FEB 28, 2008.

Parents! We are looking for Resident Assistants to assist our Head Resident. If you are planning to stay at the dormitory as a chaperone for your son or daughter please consider becoming a Resident Assistant. All RA’s receive free housing and other benefits. We are also looking for parents of 12 and 13 year olds who wish to serve as chaperons for their own child and up to 5 more students in this age range.  These chaperons will recieve a 50% discount on tuition. Please contact the office and ask for Lee as soon as possible. Parents who serve as RA’s will have the option of either living with their son or daughter in a double or staying in a single, if available.  All potential RA's will be interviewed and undergo a criminal background check.
