Summer Intensive Audition Process |
|
|
All students entering the school will be auditioned for placement. Acceptance into the Summer Intensive is based on the student’s technical ability and talent. Students may audition at one of the stops on our audition tour, by submitting a video (both VHS and DVD formats are accepted), or by appointment at the School in New York City. Please bring a 5 x 7 picture of the student in 1st arabesque or tondue derriere, to the audition. Application forms will be provided at the audition site. Please arrive one hour before the audition time for registration. YOU DO NOT NEED TO HAVE THE APPLICATION FORM IN ADVANCE. IT WILL BE PROVIDED ON THE AUDITION SITE. Please do not call the school for the audition form!
The audition fee is $30 for a class audition and $35 for a videotape audition.
A letter will be sent out to inform you whether you are accepted or not. You should expect this letter within two weeks of your audition, although letters often go out sooner. Please DO NOT call the office within this period to ask about your acceptance. Your invitation to the program will include complete instructions on accepting the invitation and all the information you will need to come to New York including comprehensive housing details (also found on this website).
The Joffrey Ballet School also offers a limited amount of scholarships. These scholarships are given to the most talented students and are based on the audition. There are no forms to fill out for the scholarship. You will be informed in the letter of acceptance if you are one of the scholarship recipients.
Video Audition Requirements

Please include a 5 x 7 picture of the student in 1st arabesque or tondue derriere and $35 fee in cashier's check or money order ONLY.
The audition tape should include:
1. A short technical demonstration at the barre or center, the content of which will cover plies, tendues, degages (straight with plie from fifth) rond de jambe, passé developpe en croix, grand battements, and balances on one leg. The exercises can be short with enough repetition that the dancer can be seen clearly. This section does not need to be more than ten minutes in length.
2. A classical variation, (on pointe for women) one to two minutes in length.
