All students who wish to attend a Joffrey Ballet School summer program must audition in order to be accepted. Acceptance into any of our programs is based on the student’s technical ability and talent. Students may audition at one of the scheduled auditions on our tour, by submitting a video (DVD only) or by appointment at the school in New York City. Please call the office for further information (212-254-8520).

ATTENTION: Applicants for trainee department 2010-2011 can audition at any audition site on our summer audition tour

To Register for an Audition:

Online Registration (Starts November 9th)- Register in advance online! Please arrive a half hour before your audition time to check in.
Single Audition Cost: $30
BOTH Ballet and Jazz & Contemporary Audition Cost: $45
Master Class Cost: $30

Audition Site Registration- Register on the day of your audition. Please arrive at least one hour before your audition time to register.
(Cash or money order only at audition site)
Single Audition Cost: $35
BOTH Ballet and Jazz & Contemporary Audition Cost: $70
Master Class Cost: $35

Students auditioning for a ballet program, please bring a 5 x 7 picture in 1st arabesque to the audition. Please wear a pink tights and ballet shoes and a leotard of any color. Students on pointe should bring their pointe shoes.
Students auditioning for a jazz & contemporary program, please bring a 5 x 7 picture of the student jumping with your face visible to the audition. Please wear a leotard and either tights or shorts, and bring both ballet and jazz shoes or sneakers.


Video Audition Requirements: (These are different for the Ballet and Jazz & Contemporary programs. If you are auditioning for both programs, you must submit both video audition forms, but only one DVD, following the requirements for the ballet program).

THE LATEST ANY AUDITION VIDEO WILL BE CONSIDERED IS MARCH 15, 2010. HOWEVER, PROGRAMS MAY FULL BY THAT TIME. IT IS IMPORTANT TO SUBMIT YOUR VIDEO AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. 


Ballet Program Auditions: New York City & Georgia

The audition tape should include:

1. A short technical demonstration at the barre or center. The student must include plies, tendues, degages (from fifth position, both straight and with plie), ronde de jambe, passé developpe en croix, grand battements, and balances on one leg.  The exercises can be short, but with enough repetition that the dancer can be seen clearly.  This section does not need to be more than ten minutes in length.

2. A classical variation, (on pointe for women) one to two minutes in length.

Please submit the following with your DVD:

- 5 x 7 picture of the student in 1st arabesque or tendue derriere
- $40 fee in cashier's check or money order ONLY

Special Note: Auditions are not required for acceptance into Georgia’s Young Dancer Program.  Students will be taken on a first-applied, first-accepted basis.

Jazz & Contemporary Auditions: New York City & Miami

The audition tape should include:

1. A short technical demonstration at the barre or center. The student must include plies, tendues, degages (from fifth position, both straight and with plie), ronde de jambe, passé developpe en croix, grand battements, and balances on one leg.  The exercises can be short, but with enough repetition that the dancer can be seen clearly.  This section does not need to be more than ten minutes in length.

2. A modern or jazz solo, one to two minutes in length.


Please submit the following with your DVD:
- Jazz & Contemporary Video Audition Form Jazz & Contemporary Video Audition Form
- 5 x 7 picture of the student jumping with their face visible
- $40 fee in cashier's check or money order ONLY

Audition Results:

Notification of your audition results will be emailed within two weeks of your audition. Please do not call the office within this period to ask about your results. Accepted students will receive an acceptance packet in the mail shortly after their initial notification. This packet will include instructions on accepting the invitation, completing your registration, housing details, and all other information pertaining to the program you have been accepted into.

The Joffrey Ballet School also offers a limited amount of scholarships. These scholarships are given to the most talented students and are based on the audition. There are no forms to fill out for the scholarship. You will be informed in the letter of acceptance if you are one of the scholarship recipients.
