Overview

Founded by Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino over 50 years ago, the Joffrey Ballet School is a renowned international dance institute, utilizing strong and sound principles to train dancers in classical ballet technique. The Joffrey curriculum is designed to train dancers to be adaptable to any style of dance while instilling discipline, a solid work ethic, and a passion for dance and its heritage. The Joffrey Ballet School Summer Intensive provides sound principles in classical ballet technique by identifying a dancer’s weaknesses and strengths and improving the dancer through an intensive corrective process of training and developing artistry. When a student has made sufficient progress, and upon the recommendation of the faculty, he or she may be invited into the year-round Trainee Program, the School’s pre-professional training program.

The Summer Intensive exposes students to a world of ballet on a level that some students may not have had the opportunity to experience before. Students are taught by the School’s renowned faculty giving instruction in a professional manner and setting where students are challenged to reach the peak of their potential. As during the year, the School invites guest faculty to join our resident instructors during the summer. Over the past year the School has hosted instructors such as Judith Reyn, Gelsey Kirkland, and Alexandre Proia.

While attending the program in New York, students will be exposed to New York’s unparalleled dance community. Not only will students have the opportunity to see performances by New York’s resident companies, like ABT and New York City Ballet, they can also see dance companies from all over the world for which New York is a major touring stop.

Auditions

Admittance into the summer intensive is by audition only. Acceptance is based on the student’s technical ability and talent. Students may audition at one of our audition sites, at the Joffrey School in New York by appointment, or by Video/DVD through the mail. For video/DVD instructions click here. Send the Video/DVD to : Joffrey Ballet School, ATTN Summer Intensive, 434 6th Avenue, 3rd Flr, New York, NY 10011.

Program Details

The Summer Intensive is a one to eight week intensive summer course which culminates in a student performance at a local theater on the last day of the program. The intensive is divided into open and closed periods intended to provide as much flexibility for a student’s summer schedule as possible. The first four weeks of the intensive are an open period when students may attend for as many weeks as they like. The last four weeks are a closed period during which ONLY students who will be in the show may attend. At the beginning of the closed period students will be re-evaluated and re-assigned levels in preparation for the performance. Only students who attend five weeks of the program OR transfer from another Joffrey program for the last four weeks may be in the show.

During both periods students receive four classes a day beginning with their ballet technique and pointe or men’s classes. Each day these classes are followed by additional classes consisting of variations, modern, jazz, partnering, Yoga , a lecture series, and an additional technique class. The particular make-up of a student’s class schedule is determined by their level of ability. During the closed period the final class of the day becomes a rehearsal for the performance. Depending on how a student is cast, they may have two rehearsals a day.

In addition to the core program the School offers add-on courses in Swing and Acting for Dancers. The School also organizes trips to see dance performances throughout the city in the evenings. These trips include performances by ABT and City Ballet, accompanied by backstage tours with company dancers.

Housing

After a successful pilot program in 2007, the School has leased a 111 bed dormitory facility near the School. The dormitory is staffed by Joffrey chaperones and intended to house both students and parents. There are not enough beds to accommodate all of our students and their chaperones so beds in the dormitory are available on a first come, first serve basis. However students are required to stay at the dormitory until such time as the dormitory is full. This requirement is waived for students over 18, those who have local relatives or chaperones they can stay with, or students who apply for a waiver due to extenuating circumstances.

Once the dormitory is full we have an extensive list of alternative summer housing facilities for students in Manhattan as well as a housing networking list for parents and students. For a more detailed description of our housing options please visit our website: www.joffreyballetschool.com and click on “Summer Intensive”.
