OVERVIEW
Founded by Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino over 50 years ago, the Joffrey Ballet School is a renowned international dance institution utilizing sound principles to train dancers in classical and contemporary ballet technique. The Joffrey Ballet School curriculum is designed to train dancers to be adaptable to any style of dance while also instilling discipline, a solid work ethic, and a passion for dance and its history. The Joffrey Ballet School Summer Intensive identifies a dancer’s strengths and weaknesses and strives to improve each dancer through a detailed corrective process of principled training while also nurturing their personal artistry. When a student has made sufficient progress, and upon the recommendation of the faculty, he or she may be invited into the year-round Trainee Program, the School’s pre-professional training program.

The Summer Intensive exposes students to a rigorous and exciting ballet program. The School invites master teachers to join our renowned faculty who give instruction in a professional setting while challenging each student to reach the peak of their potential.

While attending the Summer Intensive program in New York, students will also be exposed to New York’s unparalleled dance community. Not only will students receive world class training, they will also have the opportunity to see performances by New York’s resident companies, such as American Ballet Theater and New York City Ballet, along with other major American and international dance companies.

PROGRAM DETAILS

The Summer Intensive is a one to eight week summer intensive course which culminates in a student performance at a local theater on the last day of the program. The intensive is divided into intensive track and performance track to provide as much flexibility for a student’s summer schedule as possible. Students are encouraged to attend as many weeks as possible to obtain the greatest benefit from the program.

PERFORMANCE TRACK: June 15th through August 8th (minimum attendance last four weeks of program): More advanced students will be invited to the performance track of the intensive. Performance track students will put on a performance in a local theater at the end of the intensive. These students must attend for a minimum of the last 4 weeks of the intensive. For the first four weeks of the intensive performance level students will take the same classes as the intensive study students. Students will receive four classes a day. Ballet technique/men’s class and pointe/pas de deux are required as two of the four for every student. Additional classes are offered in variations, modern, jazz, partnering, improvisation, contemporary ballet, yoga, Pilates, dance history, and health and wellness lectures. The only difference between the performance track and the intensive study track, besides the performance , is during the last four weeks the fourth class of the day becomes a rehearsal. Students who select the performance track must attend the last four weeks OR obtain permission to transfer from another Joffrey or approved programs for the last three weeks.

INTENSIVE STUDY TRACK: June 15th through August 8th (minimum 1 week attendance, maximum 8 weeks): Students in the intensive study track receive four classes a day. Ballet technique/men’s class and pointe/pas de deux are required as two of the four for every student. Additional classes are offered in variations, modern, jazz, partnering, improvisation, contemporary ballet, yoga, Pilates, dance history, and health and wellness lectures. Actual class schedules are determined by each student’s level of ability.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

The School organizes trips to see dance performances throughout the city in the evenings. These trips include performances by American Ballet Theatre and New York City Ballet accompanied by backstage tours with company dancers. In addition to performances, we offer excursions to see renowned landmarks and cultural sights in New York such as Coney Island, Central Park, and the Statue of Liberty. Classes will be scheduled so that they do not interfere with extracurricular activities, and all students will have the opportunity to attend.

Students who are accepted and register for the program will be able to sign up for extracurricular activites from February 1, 2009 through to April 30, 2009.  A list of activities and their cost will be posted towards the end of January prior to the sign up period. Click here to see if the list is posted.

SUMMER HOUSING

Our dormitory is in a centrally located neighborhood on Manhattan’s upper west side, near Central Park. This is one of New York’s safest neighborhoods. The dormitory is staffed by Joffrey Resident Assistants and is intended to house both students and parents. There are more spaces in the program than there are beds in the dormitory. If you do not get a spot in the dormitory, we have an extensive alternative housing list that includes many housing options near to the school. If the dormitory is full we will provide this housing list to you. Students are required to stay in the dormitory unless it is full , they are staying with a local relative, or they submit a dormitory waiver form and it is accepted

The dormitory is available to students ages 12 and older. Students ages 12 and 13 must come with their own chaperone or sign up for the school’s chaperone list. Parents who are interested in becoming chaperons at the dormitory will have up to five students in this age group assigned to them from this list.

We will have 1 Resident Assistant (RA) for every 20 students under the age of 18 and 1 Head Resident in charge of all Joffrey students who will live at the dormitory. Interested parents may apply to become RA’s by filling out the RA application form. Students will be placed in the dorm by age. There are single, double, and triple rooms. Students may request a particular roommate.

The dormitory is approximately 15-20 minutes by subway to and from the school. RA’s will accompany students on the subway to and from the school at designated times. The dormitory has 24-hour security access limited to students, immediate family members, and summer personnel. The facilities include the equivalent of two full size kitchens, six microwaves, ten computers with Internet access, a laundry room, and a lounge with a television. Each room has a new air conditioner, refrigerator, two closets, and a dresser. The dormitory is surrounded by all sorts of restaurants and groceries serving every budget and lifestyle (At the moment, we do not provide meals at the dormitory.)

Students ages 12 to 13 are not allowed to leave the dormitory without their assigned chaperon.

Students ages 14 and older will be accompanied by RA’s to and from the dormitory and the school. These students will have a 9:00 PM curfew at the dormitory. Students in this age group may not leave the dormitory in groups of less than 2, unless they are going to the grocery or pharmacy across the street. Students are limited to a specific geographic area around the dormitory, beyond which they may not go. When students leave the building they must sign out, list their destination and expected return time. Students who fail to follow these and the other rules of the dormitory will be confined to the dormitory after class, except to purchase food and other necessities, for a duration determined by the Head Resident.
