The Trainee Program of the Joffrey Ballet School is a four-year post-secondary program that is both highly competitive and extremely intensive. It trains young dancers in the classical ballet technique and artistry required for an active career in a professional company.  Further, the Trainee Program frequently provides disciplined dancers with the opportunity to perform in professional arenas while continuing their training.  The Trainee Program demands a deep commitment on the part of the students and is recommended only to those students who are dedicated to working diligently and exclusively towards a career in dance.

Certificate Requirements

The Joffrey Ballet School is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Dance and meets the U.S.A. Department of Education standards for a school of vocational training.  The trainee program leads to a certificate.  The certificate is conferred on Trainees who complete 3450 hours of training – over a minimum of four (4) years and a maximum of (6) years – and maintain satisfactory progress.

Attendance: Trainees must make a commitment to attend a minimum of 14 classes per week per semester.  Technique classes are offered during the Fall and Spring semesters and the Summer course.  All Trainees are required to attend a minimum of 14 technique classes per week, amounting to a minimum of 900 hours of supervised study per academic year.   Trainees are allowed up to 140 hours of excused absences. Absences may be excused for medical or professional reasons.  All absences must be approved by the Director in order to be deemed “excused” absences.

Advanced Standing: Credit towards the certificate at the Joffrey Ballet School is not generally granted for technique classes taken at other institutions except in the form of placement in technique level. Requests on a case-by-case basis may be considered.

Special Courses, Rehearsal Projects and Performance Training: Credit towards the certificate at the Joffrey Ballet School may be earned through participation in various projects, such as rehearsal and performance in a Workshop performance.  Each student is responsible for keeping track of any such activity that he or she participates in outside of regular classes at the School.  Each student should complete a written “Documentation of Training” at the time of the “special training” such documentation must include the name, title, address and telephone number of the supervisor / choreographer, the name of the producing organization, the dates of the activity, the hours worked on each day, and a brief description of the project.  This written documentation should be submitted to the Administrative Office upon completion of the activity.

Satisfactory Progress / Student Evaluation: Students in the Trainee Program do not receive letter grades.  They are evaluated at the end of each term – Summer, Fall, and Spring – by Trainee program faculty members.  Students receive evaluations of each element of ballet technique taught in the program and are rated on each facet of class performance.  Ratings range from unsatisfactory to excellent.  Each faculty member then makes a recommendation regarding retention of the student in the Trainee Program.  If a majority of the evaluators indicate that the student is not making satisfactory progress, an instructor conference is held to determine whether the student should be placed on probation.

If the student is placed on probation and/or dropped from the Trainee Program after the probationary period due to lack of progress in class and/or failure to meet minimum attendance standards, he or she may appeal the decision.  The appeal must be made in writing to the Director.  The student must present any information that he or she feels has bearing on his or her performance and attendance.  Appeals are considered by the Director and faculty on a case-by-case basis and students are informed of the results in writing.

Recipients of financial aid continue to be eligible for such aid during the probationary period. If satisfactory progress is not re-established during the probationary term as shown by improved faculty evaluations and maintenance of minimum attendance, the student is asked to leave the Program.  If the student successfully appeals this decision by presenting adaquete mitigating circumstances for his and her lack of progress and is reinstated in the Trainee Program, his or her financial aid may also be reinstated.  Determination that a student has met requirements for reinstatement of financial aid is made by the Financial Aid Administrator.
