The Children’s Department at the Joffrey Ballet School offers classes based on a syllabus designed to develop the very young dancer. It emphasizes development of body strength, coordination and the discipline necessary for the learning of classical ballet. Although we take our training seriously, we strive to create a nurturing, comfortable, and fun atmosphere in the classroom. The children’s classes are divided into 3 categories: Dance with Me and Creative Movement (2 ½ – 4 years old), Pre-Ballet (5 – 6 years old), & Ballet Foundation (7 years old).
Dance with Me and Creative Movement (2 ½ – 4 years old): The earliest preparation for the study of ballet begins with one hour classes, once or twice a week, for 2 ½ to 4 year olds. The children are introduced to the concepts of basic movements, jumping, marching, walking, hopping and are made aware of music and rhythm. Exercises for building physical strength and coordination are offered in a nurturing atmosphere. Children gradually learn the disciplines required in the ballet studio. “Dance with me” classes for 2 ½ to 3 year olds allow parents and care-givers to join the fun in the classroom with the students. These classes provide an opportunity for students who are not yet comfortable being in class alone to participate and also an opportunity for parents to share a fun activity with their child. No audition required.
Pre-Ballet (5 – 6 years old): These 1 hour classes, once or twice a week, are designed for 5-7 year olds. The classes are aimed towards building physical strength, correct posture, and flexibility. Furthermore, they aim to develop self-discipline, attention span, and response to rhythm and musical patterns. No audition required.
Ballet Foundation (7 years old):
Ballet Foundation meets once or twice a week. Students are systematically taught ballet exercises at the barre and center floor in preparation for their entry into the Young Dancer Ballet Program. No audition required.
Schedules are available by level on the Class Schedules page.
