The Joffrey Ballet School was founded in 1952 by Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino to develop and train professional dancers. Due to its unparalleled leadership and artistry, the school became and remains at the forefront of American dance education and classical ballet training. In the citation of the prestigious “Capezio Award”, conferred on Robert Joffrey in 1974, he is commended as “an ardent spokesman for the stern by loving guide to youth, be they gifted children, teenage students with dreams, or dedicated young professionals, whom he has served as dancer, teacher, director. The school is a testimony to his merit.”
The Joffrey Ballet School achieves distinction by providing superior instructors, counseling, facilities, and aesthetic direction to its students. Until recently the daily operations of the school were overseen by Edith D’Addario, director of the school since 1962. Now Edith’s daughter Gail, herself a former student of the school and Robert Joffrey, maintains the same dedication and standards of excellence as the new director of the Joffrey Ballet School. Gail has also continued preparing young dancers for careers in the competitive world of dance and recommending them for professional jobs. Gail D’Addario and the prestigious faculty, many of whom trained directly with Mr. Joffrey and performed with the Joffrey companies, maintain the highest level of expectations for their students. Together they create a setting wherein young dancers can achieve important professional and artistic goals.
The Joffrey Ballet School gets results. Students have graduated to the world-class Joffrey Ballet Company and numerous companies from Houston and Pittsburgh to San Francisco and Dayton, and companies throughout Canada and Europe. Joffrey Ballet School students and graduates have won countless grants and scholarships from the world of dance, including the pre-eminent Princess Grace Foundation Award. The school is pivotal in training dancers who become instrumental in the success of ballet in the United States and represent the excellence of our dance community throughout the world. Dancers and choreographers from all parts of the globe regard the Joffrey Ballet School as the foundation of fine arts education and the pinnacle of classical ballet instruction.
Welcome to the close knit Joffrey community. We invite you to embrace our professional and aesthetic goals: beautiful dance – beautiful dancing. |
