The Joffrey Ballet School’s ballet intensive is designed for young dancers with a minimum of three years of ballet experience who love dance and want to immerse themselves in the art of ballet. This intensive is designed to perpare the student for the level of technique and artistry required for the upper level Summer Intensive in New York. Students are systematically taught ballet exercises at the barre and center floor, progressing towards more complex combinations and work on pointe. It is not required that the student already be on pointe in order to audition. The intensive will be divided between those students on pointe and those students who are pre-pointe. There are 25 spots in each level of this program. Audition is required for this age group. You may attend an audition on our tour, make an appointment to audition at the school or send in a Video / DVD.

The Joffrey Ballet School Young Dancer program is designed to systematically and progressively educate the young dancer in the seven basic movements of dance: to bend, to extend, to rise, to glide, to jump, to dart, and to turn.

The Joffrey Ballet School program is sensitive to the physical and mental development of the individual rather than having an expectation based on age. The objective is to empower the young dancer through coordination exercises in ballet that are appropriate for their stage of physical and mental development.

The Young Dancer Program provides education for students interested in a rigorous dance track. Admission will be by audition only, and the student’s level will be determined by both age and ability.

Student Housing Safety Polices (Ages 10-13)

Students ages 10 to 13 are not allowed to leave the dormitory without their assigned Chaperone.

Students ages 10 and 13 may come with their own chaperone or they will be assigned to a Joffrey Chaperone. Parents who are interested in becoming Joffrey Chaperones at the dormitory will have up to five students in this age group assigned to them from this list. A chaperone premium will be charged to those students requiring a chaperone.

Room Assignments

Room assignments will be made solely by Joffrey Ballet School staff. Should you request a particular roommate, we will make every effort to accommodate your request. Should we match you with a roommate, Joffrey Ballet School will attempt to give you information about your roommate at least a week prior to your arrival. In the event of a roommate conflict, Joffrey Ballet School reserves the right to relocate roommates to another room similar to the room to which they are currently assigned.

If you are interested in working as an RA or Chaperone please read the duties described below and submit the application form.

Resident Advisors will work together to take care of the following responsibilities: 1. Escorting students back and forth from the dormitory, school and extracurricular activities, 2. Monitoring student movement in and out of the dorm, 3. Enforcing the rules of the dormitory. 4. Assisting students when they are ill or injured (making appointments with doctors, getting soup, communicating with their parents, etc.) 5. Serving as another point of contact for parents. 6. Assist the Head Resident with the administration of the dormitory. There are two RAs per floor who will work as a team. RA’s will have at least one day off, as well as most days while students are in class. An RA will usually have two evenings a week covering the front door and checking curfew. RA’s will receive free lodging, $100 per week stipend, all transportation in New York City covered, and all tickets to events they chaperon. RA’s are expected to arrive two day earlier than the date they officially start for training. On departure, responsibilities end on Sunday at noon (not Saturday).

Joffrey Chaperones are responsible for FOUR TO SIX 10 and 13 year olds, including their own child. This position is meant for parents who wish to accompany their own 10 or 13 year old child to New York and would like to stay at the dormitory with them and are willing to chaperon other students in this age group in exchange for free lodging and other compensation mentioned below. We will consider parents of older students if all RA positions are full and there is a need. Chaperones are responsible for these students any time they leave the dormitory and students may not leave without their chaperon unless the students are with another Joffrey Chaperone (although the student may be granted an exception to go to the supermarket or pharmacy on the block by the dormitory). Chaperones take the students to and from school and may volunteer to assist RAs with extracurricular activities. Chaperones are to assist these students with shopping for their needs, including meals. Chaperones are NOT required or meant to cook meals for their students, however, Chaperones and parents often work out agreements where the parents pay the Chaperone to cook and purchase food privately. If you are interested in cooking then you may indicate it on the application form and we will connect you with those interested parents. Chaperones help their students with their needs in general, particularly when ill or injured as an RA would. Chaperones work together and report to the Head Resident. Chaperones have time off when their students are in class and after they are in the dormitory for the night (after dinner). When the students are in for the night their behavior is the responsibility of the RAs. Chaperones receive free lodging, transportation in New York City, and tickets to events they volunteer for. Chaperones are expected to arrive no later than Saturday of their first week in order to be trained and maintain a smooth transition from the previous Chaperone.

In the event that Joffrey Ballet School determines that you do not fit into the Joffrey Ballet School environment, Joffrey Ballet School reserves the right to terminate any tenant’s license at its sole discretion.

DISCALIMER: There are more spaces in the program than there are beds in the dormitory. If you do not get a spot in the dormitory, we have an extensive alternative housing list that includes many housing options near to the school. If the dormitory is full we will provide this housing list to you. Students are required to stay in the dormitory unless it is full, they are staying with a local relative, or they submit a dormitory waiver form and it is accepted.
